Misanthrope by Moliere

Alceste in High School, 1975

Directed by Richard Macht who played the role at Dartmouth. He was one of those teachers who was vastly overqualified for his job--bright and detached, and you couldn't figure out why he was suddenly popping up, middle age, with a PhD, as a high school German teacher, except that perhaps he was an unconventional  intellect who also needed a job. He was very humorous, though.

It was very hot, I recall. People in front row said when I made too sweeping a gesture, with layers of satin costume, sweat would fly toward them. An inspirational and perspirational performance.  Eliante was played by Amy Castle, as pleasant personally as was that character in the play.  Celimine, my romantic interest in the play, was played by Nan Mary Nieman, a variously talented individual, violin, math, general niceness, who later attended Princeton and Harvard Business School.  Steven Hass played a very convincing Oronte who immensely entertained the audience. Before the play we saw Diana Rigg (Mrs. Peel from The Avengers) play the role on Broadway. Mr. Proskauer, a distinguished fellow, too this photo. I was very gratified to what friends of mine, from other schools, showed up for the viewing.
